What it is

Semaglutide is a lab-made peptide that closely mimics GLP-1, a hormone your gut releases after you eat. GLP-1 helps the body manage blood sugar and signals the brain that you are full. Semaglutide is built to last far longer in the body than the natural hormone, so it keeps that signal going.

It has one of the largest human research records of any peptide and is approved as a medicine in many countries for specific uses.

Mechanism

Semaglutide plugs into the GLP-1 docking point (receptor) on cells. (A receptor is the dock a hormone plugs into to send its signal.) Switching on this signal helps the body release insulin when blood sugar is high, slows how fast the stomach empties, and reduces appetite.
