What it is

DSIP (delta sleep-inducing peptide) is a small naturally occurring peptide first identified in the brain in the 1970s. It got its name because early research linked it to deep ("delta-wave") sleep.

Decades later, its exact role is still not well understood, and research results have been inconsistent.

Mechanism

DSIP has been studied for possible effects on sleep, stress hormones, and brain signaling, but no single clear mechanism has been pinned down. Different studies have reported different effects, and it does not have one well-defined receptor.
